In the beginning, there was only Chaos (the
emptiness of the universe).
From Chaos came Gaia (goddess of earth), Eros (god of sexual love), Nyx
(goddess of night), and Erebus (god of darkness).
In her sleep, Gaia gave birth to Uranus (god of sky) and Pontus (god of
sea) on her own. Uranus was firstborn and was seen as his mother's
equal.
Uranus was born larger than his mother, so he enveloped her.
Brimming with affection for Gaia, he showered her with fertile rain.
Gaia soon birthed the remainder of the world.
Gaia took Uranus as her
husband, and they produced many children.
Their offspring include:
The Titans, Cyclopes, Hecatonchires, Erinyes, and Gigantes. Uranus was
appalled at the sight of his offspring (specifically the Hecatonchires
and Cyclopes, because he was fearful of their strength).
He hurled the Hecatonchires and Cyclopes into the bowels of the earth,
Tartarus.
He also forced the Titans back into Gaia's womb.
This caused Gaia severe pain. This agony was so unbearable that she
convinced her son, Cronus, to end his father's fertility.
Gaia produced
an adamantine sickle for her son to use against Uranus.
Cronus hid out of sight, waiting for his father to lay with the earth.
When Uranus finally neared Gaia, Cronus struck him, castrating his
father, severing the union between earth and sky. The blood from the
open wound created the Gigantes and Erinyes.
The cut-off body part fell into the sea, creating a white foam.
Aphrodite was said to have been born from this. Cronus became the new
king of the gods.
The Hecatonchires and Cyclopes were thrown back into Tartarus by Cronus
because of their arrogance and lack of discipline.
Trivia! Who was Gaia,
and where did she come from? Trivia! Who was Uranus? Trivia! What did
Uranus do that caused Gaia pain, and why did he do it? Trivia! Do you
think that Uranus's children hated him? Why or why not? "Gaia or Gaea,
known as Earth or Mother Earth (the Greek common noun for "land" is ge
or ga).
She was an early earth goddess and it is written that Gaia was
born from Chaos, the great void of emptiness within the universe, and
with her came Eros. She gave birth to Pontus (the Sea) and Uranus (the
Sky). This was achieved parthenogenetically (without male
intervention)." [Ron Leadbetter] "Uranus was aghast by the sight of his
offspring, the Cyclopes and the Hecatoncheires. He hid them away in
Tartarus (the bowels of the earth) inside Gaia, causing her intense
pain.
The discomfort became so great that she asked her youngest son,
Cronus, to castrate his father, as this would cease his fertility and
put an end to more monstrous offspring. To accomplish this deed Gaia
made an adamantine sickle, which she gave to Cronus. That night Uranus
came to lay with Gaia.
And as the sky god drew close, Cronus struck with
the sickle and cut off Uranus's genitals. From the blood that fell from
the open wound were born nymphs and giants, and when Cronus threw the
severed genitals into the sea a white foam appeared. From this foam
Aphrodite the goddess of love and desire was born."
